User Guide: BMS 2.0

Intro

BMS stands for Backup & Monitoring Server which performs the following tasks:
- perform the SOP backups
- run the Fault Monitoring and Performance monitoring applications
This document describes how to use the monitoring interface

Tactical overview

This is the view where you can see a general summary of the ongoing and acknowledged issues of the hosts and services configured.
From there you can click on the services or hosts you want to check.
If you click on host you have the list of the hosts unreachable.
Click on the host and you will have the possibility to acknowledge an issue, schedule a downtime and see the status of all services associated to that host.

Acknowledge a problem

By acknowledging a problem, you will not receive the alerts anymore.
On the host status page, click on the "Acknowledge this service problem" link in the service command menu on the right.
You can set a comment to inform the acknowledging. The comment will be displayed in the bottom of the host status.
To remove the acknowledge, click on the delete button.

Schedule downtime

By setting up a downtime for a host, you prevent the BMS to send alerts in case of planned works (eg : power maintenance).
To do this, click on the Downtime entry in the general menu on the left.
You simply have to configure the host, the start and end date of the downtime.
By clicking on the Downtime link, you can also see all the configured Downtime for all hosts.

Services status

On the host status page, click on the View Status Detail For This Host link on the upper left and all the service status for that host will be displayed.
You see the status of the service, the last time it was checked and the status information if provided.
To find out the meaning of the status of the service, refer to the documentation of the probe. For some service, you have the possibility to have a graphic report. To access this, click on the action button next to it.
You can zoom on those graphics and download them in PDF or XML files.

Hostgroups

The hostgroup is a view in wich VSOP's are grouped. The criteria to group VSOP's is that all the VSOP's of a same hostgroup are on the same host SOP. A hostgroup can then be defined as a SOP that contains VSOP's and the hostgoup list the containing VSOP's. For a hostgroup to be displayed, two conditions must be fulfilled
  • The host SOP must be monitored
  • The host SOP must contain at least one VSOP that is monitored
