User Guide: Zero Config Phone Provisioning 1

This document explains how to install and configure phones using the Zero-Config feature. It is intended for an on-site technician who physically installs the phones.

Information required

  • The number to dial to configure the phone (zeroconf IVR)
  • Which phone type should be placed on which desk
  • The number for each desk

Phone installation procedure

  1. Place a phone of the correct type on the desk
    • there is no need to verify the MAC address
  2. Connect and power the phone
  3. Wait for the boot process to finish
    • For an Aastra phone, you should see UNCONFIGURED being displayed
  4. Dial the zeroconf IVR
    • For a Polycom phone: hook off to automatically dial the zeroconf IVR
    • For any other phone: hook off and dial the zeroconf IVR (usually 8888 or ##88)
  5. Enter the number for this desk followed by # and hang up.
  6. Wait for the phone to get configured automatically
    • After about 2 to 5 minutes the phone will reboot automatically (on large installations it may take more time).
    • After the reboot, the phone should be fully configured
  7. After the automatic reboot the number should be displayed
    • If this is not the case or the number is not correct: go to step 4.
    • If it is still not correct, escalate the problem
  8. Make a test call

Working in parallel

You may execute the installation procedure for many phones in parallel. E.g. You can start to and connect some phones. As soon as some of them have finished their boot process, you can dial the IVR and enter their number. Then connect some more phones while the others get configured, etc.

Limitations

  • The phones must be logged in on the same day as they have been booted the last time:
    • if you plug in a phone at 9 in the morning, you should log the phone before midnight.
    • If you fail to do this, the phone provisioning will fail. In this case, you will have to reboot the phone, and then log the phone again
      • reboot the phone
  • If you assign a number 123 to a phone A that has been assigned to an other phone B already, phone B will continue showing 123 on the screen as it has not rebooted. Simply reboot phone B
  • If you have configured a polycom phone and want to change the number (ex: you made a mistake), the polycom will not automatically dial the provisioning number anymore. You will have to enter the number (usually 8888) and press dial
