Simbox Configuration
Prerequisites
- Simboxes are not compatible with 3G-only cards. Not all 3G cards keep the ascending compatibility with 2G.
- Some GSM networks (such as Vodafone) always use roaming to connect their customers. Do not forget to enable it if needed!
- Tested firmware version: 01.00.04
Connect the Simbox
- Connect the antenna to the simbox first. If powered up without an antenna, the GSM transmitter could be damaged.
- Connect the power supply if there is no PoE available or if you don't want to use it
- Connect the network cable (note that the simbox will use its last configured IP, beware of conflicts !)
- The device is completely started when the Power LED is blue and not blinking. All GSM LED's should be red as no SIM card is present
To configure the simbox please perform the following actions:
Factory reset
To perform a factory reset of the simbox, press the RESET button to the right of the RJ45 Ethernet connector for a long time.
Factory parameters:

Connecting to the Administration Interface
- Ensure that the simbox IP is reachable from your workstation (only HTTP is needed)
- One way to do it is to add an IP address in the same network as the simbox to the network interface of your workstation (e.g. on linux: "ip addr add 192.168.1.200/24 dev eth0")
- Open a web browser and type the simbox IP
- Login as admin
Network Parameters
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > Ethernet configuration
- Configure IP address, subnet and router (network gateway).
- Save and wait for redirect to the new IP
Unlock Key
Make sure the simbox is unlocked:
Navigate to: Gateway control > Firmware/License
- The unlock key is written on a Post-It inside the box of the simbox
- click on "Management" in upper right corner
- click on "Licence Key" on the left side menu
- choose "Licence key string" on the black big square
- Enter the unlock key in the "Licence key for gateway" field and Save, the simbox will restart
- Check that "Licence status" is "Unlocked" and "Gateway limitation" is "(no limit)"
Date and Time
Navigate to: Gateway control > Date/Time
- Set the date and time if needed. You can use "Synchronise with local PC" to do it quickly
Login and Password
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > Login configuration
- Username & Password for resellers: please communicate your login/password to Escaux when done.
- Save
These credentials can also be used to connect to the telnet interface.
SIM Cards PIN
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > System parameters
- Set PIN to 1234 (NB: it will be used for ALL SIM cards)
- Make sure the customer sets this PIN
Roaming
To enable roaming functionality:
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > GSM outgoing groups
For each Group, in SIM cards settings > Basic Settings, you can find the field "Roaming enabled for network code"
If required by the GSM operator, add the GSM network ID (MCC+MNC) in this field. The GSM network ID should be provided by the GSM network operator. You may also be able to find the GSM network ID on the following unofficial list:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_country_code. If the GSM network operator has no code, check if it's using an other network. Example: If Vodafone uses Omnitel, Vodafone's network ID is 22210 (Omnitel).
Field value |
Effect |
<empty> |
Roaming is disabled |
23002 |
Roaming is enabled for networks with MCC+MNC code 23002 |
230XX |
Roaming is enabled for networks with MCC+MNC codes 23000 23099 |
XX001 |
Roaming is enabled for networks with MCC+MNC codes 00001 99001 |
XXXXX |
Roaming is enabled for any network |
SIP Parameters
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > VoIP Parameters
- SIP registration
- Registration domain (realm): [SOP IP address] (use the SOP IP in a Gateway+SOP architecture)
- Username: [SIP Trunk Resource ID] (= SOA1xxxx)
- Password: escaux
- IP Addresses
- Indicate the SOP IP address for SIP proxy (IP->GSM) (use the SOP IP in a Gateway+SOP architecture)
- Codecs priority: G711a - G711u
- Save
Hide the CallerID
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > GSM outgoing groups
For each Group, in SIM cards settings > Basic Settings:
- Set CLIR as "Enable (CLIP - off)"
- Save
Incoming Calls
To allow incoming calls, we make sure that all calls to the simbox are sent to a specific extension on the SOP. This extension should have a specific callflow to handle calls coming from GSM's.
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > VoIP parameters
- IP addresses
- Indicate the SOP IP address for SIP proxy (GSM->IP) (use the SOP IP in a Gateway+SOP architecture)
- Save
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > GSM incoming groups
- Mode > Accept incoming calls + dialtone
- DTMF dialling timeout [s]: 0 (guarantees that the extension will be called immediately)
- List of called numbers > Add: [extension defined on the SOP]
Repeat the 'GSM Incoming groups' step for group 2->4. Save.
Outgoing calls
Depending on the model of simbox, up to 4 SIM cards can be used. These can all belong to the same GSM network operator or they can be of different GSM network operator.
SIM cards of one GSM network operator
This setup is the easiest: Calls can be send to a random available SIM card.
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > Prefixes
- The value "Default count of digits" determines the destination number's minimum length in order to be accepted by the Simbox. Default is 9, 3 is recommended to be able to reach almost any destination.
- In Table of accepted prefixes, add the value "+" to the list, to be able to call numbers in E.164 format
- Save
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > LCR table
- By default, one entry should already be defined, with "Prefix list" = "1/" and "Groups" = "1"
- For this setup (one GSM operator), no other entry is needed.
SIM cards of multiple GSM network operators
If you have SIM cards of multiple GSM network operators in the simbox, the called number will usually determine the SIM card to be used.
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > GSM group assignment
- Assign one or multiple modules to a Group. "Module 0" is the SIM card in the first position.
- Save
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > Prefixes
- The value "Default count of digits" determines the destination number's minimum length in order to be accepted by the simbox. Default is 9, 3 is recommended to be able to reach almost any destination.
- Define the prefixes for the GSM network operators that will be used (they must begin with 0 or +, depending on the format used by the SOP - in doubt you can add both versions)
- Save
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > LCR table
- Define one line for each GSM network operator that will be used: match a Prefix List to the desired Group of modules (= SIM cards).
- Save
SIM card placement
The simbox must be powered off before adding or removing a SIM card.
- Insert all the cards in the simbox
- Power it up
Eventually, if the SIM card(s) are correctly registered to the GSM network, the corresponding LED's should be off.
If it is the case, you can now test incoming and outgoing calls.
Ringtone
Follow information below to makes the simbox generates the ring-tone. Without this configuration the parameter "PXB ring-tone" will have to be set on the GoTo.Interface action in the outgoing number mapping table of the SOP in order to hear a ring-tone for outgoing calls (trough the simbox).
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > GSM outgoing groups > GSM group x > General settings
- Delay for ALERTING [s]: Real
- Generate virtual ring tone: checked
Navigate to: Gateway configuration > VoIP parameters > Tones generated to VoIP
- Ring tone to VoIP: From GSM
